Puberty is a challenging time for most boys, especially when you are in the spotlight of both your parents and society. It’s so hard to talk about sex but it’s incredibly important that boys are educated about what’s happening to them, their bodies, and what is expected of them. With puberty comes changes in sexual identity. Boys can go from being completely heterosexual to gay or bi-sexual over the course of a few years which means they need all the tools they can get in order to make informed decisions on how they want to handle their sexuality. This includes giving up some control over what happens with their bodies by accepting help from doctors or medical professionals who have valuable information that they should know. The boys in Puberty: Sexual Education for Boys are learning how to handle everything from the physical changes to battling their own body image and finding out how to protect themselves from possible STDs and unwanted pregnancies. The story follows a 10-year old boy named Josh and his best friend, Sam (who is also his lover), as they go through puberty together. Already we’re thrown into this experience through Josh’s imagination as we watch him fly through the air with his “wings,” which reference Batman but also show his inner strength as he tries to deal with everything that puberty brings. The opening uses sound as a way of setting up the tone of what we’re about to see. As the doorbell rings, the sound of a woman calling out “Josh, Sam!” is silenced so we know that any response will be limited to Josh’s imagination. The way Puberty opens is very effective in its ability to establish a sense of mystery and realism about the boys’ change. The viewer meets Josh and Sam in their own houses for much of the film, which is rare when dealing with these issues in an audience. It sets up a bond that can only be set up through imagination and it feels very personal at the same time. Josh and Sam are telling stories to each other about what they’ve seen so far as they begin to become aware of their bodies, which is beautiful. Some of the most powerful scenes in the film deal with this as Josh and Sam talk about their bodies, feeling what it is like. This is where it becomes important that we learn that these boys were not alone in this situation as their parents make a point in the last minute or so of the film to show them in bed together and cuddled up to share ideas and comfort. This further emphasizes how important it was for Josh and Sam to reach out for help when they were confused or afraid. It also gives the parents and the audience a strong understanding of what Josh and Sam needed throughout their process. The effects of puberty can be seen in Josh and Sam’s relationship. Josh becomes more distant from Sam as his body becomes more developed, which is shown through his imagination due to him having grown wings or “sexual organs.” This idea of separation is echoed when Sam goes on a date with another boy at the end of the film where they do not actually interact in any way with each other beyond some talk about themselves and why they like each other. cfa1e77820
